About Tree of knowing

About The Tree of Knowing

The Central Biblical Archetype

We all know the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.  The eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and the subsequent banishment from the garden where the Tree of Life is found, is the seminal story of the Bible.   It is the primary and original archetype of the Bible, and hence points us to the core of human experience.  After thousands of years of human history, we humans, are now at a point where we have attained vast amounts of knowledge, both scientific and experiential.  Our knowledge is expanding rapidly, more rapidly than we could ever imagine.  None of us can master all of human knowledge because it is so vast.  But now we have this amazing tool called the internet, where all of human knowledge, for good and for evil, is documented, stored and updated constantly.  Human Life and Human Knowledge is like a vast Tree with roots, branches and fruit, nourished by what we feed it.  And our very human drive to attain knowledge, where is it heading?  What does it seek?  Well, according the story, we tend to fall into a pathological relationship with our knowledge and our experience, whereas, what we really want is to connect to the source of life.  In these modern times, as the ancients knew, we are faced with a darkness that comes from eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, a loneliness, a sadness, and a disconnection from the Source of Life, from Ourselves, and from each other.  Nihilism, despair, and a lack of meaning are at the root of all of our ills, both personal and societal.  We are entering, however, a post-secular era, as the cultural anthropologists have called it.  It is a time when the wholly secular and material approach to life has reached its limits and people seek something deeper and clearer about how to approach life.  It is no longer enough to pursue purely material pursuits.  As important as physical sustenance, abundance, and stability are to human success, they are only a rung in the ladder upwards on our journey.

There has been an assault on the Bible for several hundred years in the West.  Biblical criticism and scientific explanations for the origin of life were just a part of the distancing and rejection of Western Culture from the Bible, and this rejection is peaking in our generation where even the ideas of male and female and the value of family are openly questioned.  Nietzsche famously stated over 150 years ago that G-d is dead, meaning that he is no longer alive for people in the West.  To do this I would offer the famous joke that G-d might say, ‘rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated’!

What I mean to say is even though we feel distanced from our Source, we can get it back.  We can return to ourselves and no darkness is too great.  This is the Central Theme of the Jewish Bible and the story of the Exodus from Egypt.  As the Jewish tradition says, ” A little light dispels a lot of darkness”.  And as Rebbe Nachman of Breslov said “There is no despair in the world at all” which means we can find hope and life even in the Valley of Death or in the face of utter meaninglessness.

The Tree of Knowing is an attempt and an invitation to every individual to re-connect to the teachings of the Jewish Bible but in a new and modern light that is deeply relevant each of us.  I called it the Tree of Knowing (and not the Tree of Knowledge) but it is about how we Know Life at a very intimate level. Try to put aside all of your preconceptions about the G-d of the Old Testament and about the Old Testament itself.  The Jewish Tradition holds teachings and secrets that the world and every one of needs badly and I invite you to come explore these teachings with me in light of many areas of Modern Life.  It is my hope that this project will help up find and strengthen our connections to our True Selves and to the Source of this incredible Life.

Our History

The Tree of Knowing Project is the  culmination of many years of study and work by Rabbi Adam Perlman.  Based on the idea of the Shulchan Aruch (set table), it is meant to be a guide to the main aspects of a healthy modern life, deeply rooted in Traditional Torah ideas and advice, while also addressing many of the central themes which we face in the modern world.  It is my hope that it can help all people come closer to a meaningful life.

Our Mission

“It is a Tree of Life for those who hold onto it”. This important verse from the Book of Proverbs encourages us , that if we learn how to live and act properly, we will connect and grasp onto the Source of Life, the Tree of Life, the Source of our Being. I created the Tree of Knowing websites with this verse in mind. My sites are named after the Tree of Knowledge (Etz Daat in Hebrew), but I call it The Tree of Knowing, since knowledge sounds too intellectual, where what we are talking about is intimate life knowledge (as in Adam “knew” Eve). Inside of our knowledge, our Knowing, at our core, exists the Tree of Life. It is my hope that I can contribute a little bit to our individual and collective search for connection to each other and to our Source.
