Jewish history is riveting. For almost 4000 years, the Jews have worshiped the same G-d, yearned for the same homeland and learned Torah in the ancient Hebrew language. At the same time, the Jews came into direct contact with the great empires of the last 4000 years. Often tragic, but imbued with deep deep lessons and meaning, Jewish history continues to be an important part of world history.
The ideas of exile and redemption are central in Jewish thought. Jewish history has been a series of descent into exile and then re-building life anew. Each period had its own lessons and these are etched into the Jewish memory.
History is a learning process for all of mankind. This is the Jewish worldview. We are now in unprecedented times and we need full awareness of the lessons of the past in order to successfully build the future.
